One of the best packs I’ve ever used. I love how has all of the features I need without the fluff.

Put it to the test! I have put many brands to the test and do have my favorites. After packing out two elk and a muley this fall the Exo 5500 is now at the top of my list! The pack simply distributes the weight well. The flex in the frame was well thought out. After packing an elk over some steep and difficult terrain the pack seemed to move with my backs movement which avoided any rubbing in certain back and hip areas. The pack is light, strong and versatile.

It compresses down to nothing for those day hunts yet I am able to get my 5+ day gear loaded with room to spare. Zippers, fabric, buckets and straps are all well made.

To be honest I was a skeptic as first. Only their second year building packs did I want to risk the purchase and most importantly take the pack in on an 8 day hunt? They passed the test! Put the pack to the test!

just got the pack this summer
I have packed 1 pronghorn, I deer , and one elk with it so far ,
I was able to pack boned out deer plus my spike camp back to the truck ( 5 miles ) in one trip, good thing it was flat
elk pack was one quarter plus the head, 2 miles and 1500 virt up. pack did fine and I really liked the meat shelf.
it would be nice if their was one extra strap at the bottom of the meat shelf to help hold the quarter from slipping out

in all a very light and durable pack

I’ve humped a lot of heavy gear for SAR work in one of these, a 2015 5500. It’ll carry all day long for miles and miles and the frame “just works.” Every time I take it off I’m amazed at how heavy my pack is because when you’re wearing it the weight just disappears!

There are a few tweaks which could be done to improve it, and the hip-belt sliders tend to walk loose, but it’s a pretty amazing pack.

I bought this pack and used it for a back country elk hunt this year. I climbed about 1500 vertical feet in just over a mile with a 50lb load in the pack. The great thing was the pack was so comfortable with that weight that I forgot to take it off when we got to camp. I had been in camp for about 10 minutes when I realized it was still on. Unfortunately I did not get to test carrying an elk out with it but I loved the pack for packing in camp and for my hunting day pack.

    Great design.

The EXO 5500 is the “must have” pack for any extended backcountry hunter who needs room for gear, functionality, comfort, and heavy load hauling capabilities!! Not only does this pack perform well, but it molds to your body to help you feel balanced and comfortable in the most demanding elements and terrain. I’ve used several packs and this pack is an industry leader!!

I love my 5500! I am sold on Exo. Never thought I would pay this much for a pack, but I went out on a limb and oh boy was it money well spent! Made here in USA is the only way to go! I love how simple and practical it is for the high country hunts. Not all of extras and unneeded weight. Packed my first high country archery muley off the mountain and was very pleased with the way it handled.

Im 15 years old and recently purchased a Exo 3500 pack and tested it out elk hunting, high country deer hunting, antelope hunting, and spring bear hunting in Colorado. I would highly recommend the pack to youth and everyone else the small belt fits great, and while packing out a 5×5 bull and 4×4 mule deer the load sling mode worked great and the frame was great because of its ability to let you twist and turn with heavy loads. The Velcro attachment in the lid pocket is excellent for storing small pieces of equipment. I love pack and really like how it is designed for the dedicated, and hard working hunter.

Picked up a 5500 before archery season and really put it to the test this year. Hunted early August in Nevada on a backpack hunt and was very impressed with how it performed. Then hunted elk in my home state of Oregon in September. Was lucky enough to pack my bull and 2 others this season. Could not believe how this pack felt with mega weight of boned out meat in it. The waist belt is very comfortable! Also really like the stretch pocket on the front of the pack (great for stuffing a down coat into). Had this pack covered in blood and dirt and it washed out great and looks brand new. I would highly recommend this pack to anyone looking to purchase the last pack you will ever need.

Let me start out by saying that I own an Exo, Stone Glacier, and a couple Mystery Ranch packs. Each brand mentioned has some great things I like and things I wish they might change. With that said I have to say that my Exo 5500 is the one I find grabbing all the time now. I love the stretch pockets on the back and sides. I love having 2 large side pockets for quick access. I’ve hauled out 1 elk and a deer so far and it has been great. I find that loading onto this frame is far simpler and quicker than the other brands. I love that the x-pack material is used for the main bag making the bag very water resistant. I almost wish they would use the x-pac material on the frame where it touches the bag. I think it would cut down on blood staining on the frame side but would still be as tough as the Cordura. The zippers seem to be of lesser quality than the other brands mentioned but with a lifetime warranty and no real reason to complain yet I’m not worried. I give it 4 stars only because almost anything could use improvement but this pack blends the best of most other pack manufactures. I don’t regret getting the 5500 and find that it’s just as versatile working as a large daypack. Just my honest review. Keep up the good work Exo!

I bought this pack at the recommendation of a friend. I couldn’t be happier. It is simple to use and carries the weight easily. I have used it for a couple of hunts now and it worked great. I hauled out an elk this year and while my buddies were bending over in pain from a much lighter load, I was still feeling fresh and hardly noticed the weight on my back. I have no complaints about my pack.

Took a few recommendations and decided to get this pack for an elk trip this fall. We have a 9 mile hike in to our location and usually have a few llamas to help us pack in, but after a few untimely deaths we were short. We carried in 85# up hill most of the trek and the 5500 handled it flawlessly. The back lumbar support fits perfectly and does a great job of supporting the load on your hips when the upper body needs a break. Previous packs state they are water resistant but have had gear inside get wet, not with this pack. With 5 continuous days of rain everything stayed dry. We weren’t fortunate enough to tag an elk this year but look forward to packing out some meat with this in the future. A must have pack for any backcountry elk hunter!

I am a bit of a gear junky. So with that said I’ve tried many different packs and own a couple different brands of packs (Kuiu 7200 & a stone glacier) Since purchasing my EXO 5500 and having more than 30 days afield with it this season. It has become my system I will always bring into the backcountry with me or just for a day hunt. This year I packed out two deer and a pig with it. It was easy to load, easy to fit and carried loads up to 100lbs with extreme comfort. The guys at EXO Mountain Gear came up with a great designed pack, from the titanium frame, meat loaf self, 45 degree angle compression straps to just the perfect amount of pockets that is esstial for a packing system. It’s must have in opinion for DIY backcountry hunter or the everyday hunter who is just going out for those short day to two day hunts.

For the past several years I archery hunted elk in Montana with a Badlands Superday pack. This pack met my needs at the time; however, it was almost useless when it came to packing out meat. So I spent hours researching packs that were comfortable, light, functional, and would serve as a meat hauler. Ultimately, I narrowed it down to the mystery ranch crew cab and the Exo 5500. After talking with Steve on the phone I pulled the trigger on the Exo 5500 in multicam and couldn’t be happier. I broke this pack in this fall on a 7 day elk archery elk hunt and it worked flawlessly. I purchased the day pack lid and side pockets which I highly recommend as they come in very handy. This will be my go to pack for many years to come.

I used the 5500 on 2 different back country hunts this fall. This pack rocks! It took me a few tries to get the harness adjusted to my liking but once I got it set right it was amazingly comfortable. I lived out of this pack for over 20 days this fall and never once could I find anything I didn’t like about this pack. Even when it was loaded down with 10+ days worth of gear, it was still comfortable.

Great Work on designing this back Steve!

Awesome Pack! I lived out of the 5500 for over 20 days this fall. It took me a a few tries to find the “sweet spot” adjustment wise but once I found it, WOW! Even loaded down with 10+ days worth of gear, this pack was always very comfortable. I spent over 10 hours with 1/2 a quartered elk in/on this pack and while it was obviously heavy, it never once was uncomfortable. GREAT PACK!

I was little nervous spending the $$$ on this pack but I am sure glad that I did. I bought this pack for my first elk trip to Colorado with a very good friend of mine. I actually got him to buy one as well, not sure how he scored the T-shirt though! We both used these packs every day on our hunt and we loved them without question. Frame is great the hip belt system is awesome, actually the entire pack just works like its advertised. Even though we didn’t get to pack out any meat, both of us had the pack at the top of our must have list at the end of the trip! Communication with Steve Speck was always quick and he always answered all of my questions.

Thanks for an awesome pack! Now I’ll have to buy a hat to let everyone know.

Best pack design I have ever tried on, every feature is well thought out and there isn’t any useless extras that cost more, and end up being more of a hindrance. Unbelievably light considering what you get (the 5500), the quick access full length pockets on the sides are genius and the front stretch pocket is perfect for rain gear, fits all of my gear and then some, can’t wait to pack of a few animals and really test out the frame, keep up the amazing work!

Well. Ordered this pack last week with 2 pouches, meat shelf, and gun/bow holder. Received the package 3 days later!! Let me start by saying this pack feels amazing. I have only been able to mess around with it a short while, but I already can tell that this is a serious high quality pack. I am a previous Badlands pack owner and this blows those packs out of the water. The functions of the pack are spot on. I will leave another review once I load it up and see how it handles the weight.

Disclaimer : I am in no way shape or form paid for my opinions expressed below.
With that said 🙂 I have been using EXO for 3 years now. My first pack was the original 5500. After years of Badlands , Blackscreek and other popular brands, I found EXO through a friend.
Last year I had the first real chance to use the pack the way it was intended (previously I was using to carry camera gear). I was on a 10day trip to hunt Muleys in the Ruby Mtn’s of NV and then a week later I was packing into the backcountry of CO elk hunting. The pack is AMAZING ! I actually broke mine due to loading it wrong and being in a hurry (a bear had gotten to my elk before I did) . Not loading it correctly resulting in my frame rods to rip the stitching. The load was too lose and it was miserable. Sent the pack back to get fixed and receive the new 2016 frame. I now have a 3500 also.
This year I was debating on trying the Mystery Ranch Marshall for my 10 day trip. Or even the Kifaru stuff. But I just am not willing to “try” a new pack for that long in the backcountry. I will take my EXO 5500 everyday, 24/7 and never think twice.
Thank you for making a AWESOME product !!

I usually wear a size 34″ waist pant, so I ordered the medium sized hip belt for this pack. It was just a little too big; I was able to cinch it almost completely tight. So I sent that back and had Steve send me a size small hip belt. The small fits great. I used this pack on a 4 day hunt this past weekend. It was great. I used it to carry in all my gear, then I cinched it down and used it as a day pack. I really enjoyed it. Probably I wouldn’t use it as a day pack when I’m not hunting, because it’s just a bit much for hiking around the woods. But if I had shot a deer it would’ve been great to have the pack for that during the day. Might have to look into the day pack to switch out once I get to camp. Really comfortable, feels great at the end of the day.

Great Pack. Used it for the first time elk hunting high country like most do and it was a dramatic difference from everything else Ive used. Being prior military with a great deal of time carrying a ruck, I can tell you there will not be a disappointment in dropping the coin here. Ive carried everything from Military rucks to top end brands and it seems like Steve and the guys have thought of most everything regarding the packs construction and ergonomics. I used it most recently on a 10 day hunt in Colorado and it without a doubt held everything including food without even reaching capacity. Like most of us do, the spreadsheet gave me the total weight, carrying 43.16lbs for the pack in and just over 150lbs (pack weight included) for the only trip out carrying a deboned cow (gear not included) and it was amazing that it was my legs that were sore not my back as I would have expected.
The bag is tough, standing up to abuse from rocks, limbs, falls, and just about anything else you’d encounter. Its comfortable, the hip belt sits well and after some time, you forget its there. The shoulder straps are thin but with the weight being carried by the hip belt, they are padded just enough. It has just enough pockets to make accommodating gear for back country trips a breeze but not so many that you spend 20 minutes rifling through zippers to find that protein bar you wanted since you left camp. Speaking of zippers, one of two flaws I encountered was with the pulls. One of the pulls came apart but was fixed with some cord and the zipper always fully functional. Overall Exo mountain gear has hit a home run with this pack. It combines versatility, functionality and comfort in a way that hunters will appreciate. I can’t wait to ruck up again.

The 5500 pack is a very well built functional pack. Had a chance to use it during the 2016 Colorado second rifle elk season and it handled every I threw at it. Used it to carry out all gear needed to hunt out of a spike camp at higher elevation for 4 days. No problems with room in the pack or handling the weight while walking. With proper adjustment all the weight is on your hips and the pack is very comfortable. Unfortunately we were close to harvesting elk but didn’t close the deal so I didn’t get a chance to see how it handled packing out meat. Without all the gear for spike camp this pack compresses down well and is also very good for day hunts. Can’t see that I’ll need another pack anytime soon. Thanks for the great pack!

I’m an avid hunter/videographer from Victoria, Australia. I generally hunt 52 weekends a year, a mixture of day hunts and backpack hunts. So when it was time for me to upgrade my old pack I made a wishlist for what I wanted in my new pack/frame:

    Heavy load capability

A tough criteria to say the least, so I researched different brands and models for many months before finally settling on the Exo 5500 on the new K2 frame. And man I’m glad I did! The 5500 took my criterias above and smashed them all for a home run. It’s quite possibly the most versatile pack currently on the market and is without doubt the most comfortable pack I’ve ever worn.
If you’re like me and want one pack to do it all… This is it!

Did a 5 day Coues hunt with this bad boy and loved it. Held everything I needed and then some. Very very comfortable. Carried about 65lbs no problemo.
    Pros: Comfortable, Well-built, innovative, simple
Cons: wish it stood up when I set it on the ground, stretch pockets not as useful if pack is super full as they are hard to put something into
No pack is perfect but this one is close. Thanks, guys.

I recently went on a cow elk hunt with my little brother in Oregon’s Coast Range. While most of the hunt was not not hiking, I brought my pack just in case and so I could get it sorted out for my elk hunt in September. I had it loaded to about 25 lbs. My brother shot an elk at 375 yds, which ran down hill another 300 or so yards. We quartered and boned the elk, which I carried out in my EXO K2 5500 pack. The elevation change was about 850 ft for .33 miles, so moderately difficult terrain with a load of about 125-150lbs total for two trips (my little brother packed the front quarters).

The pack was great overall. It handled the load well, even without the meat shelf (which I now have). The meat was very secure and did not shift, even with the flexing of the frame while climbing over logs and rough terrain. I even took a fall and tumbled down a steep slope at one point and was glad to see that everything was still secure and in place. All of the buckles and straps held and did not loosen throughout the hike. It has just the right amount of buckles and straps so that it is functional but not confusing, and detaching the pack from the frame to load meat is a simple process.

The support the pack offered was great both loaded and unloaded, the lumbar support is amazing and the padding on the waist and shoulders is fantastic. I never felt discomfort or pressure or rubbing. The other reviews are spot on when they say you won’t notice the pack while you are hiking, it just fits right and hugs your body perfectly, but is never in the way or bulky. I think EXO nailed it on this pack. It expands to such a large size when you need it to (the pockets literally feel endless) and it compresses down to a ridiculously small size for day trips yet still retains almost all of its versatility.

I really wish I had something negative to say about it, but I am really having a hard time finding anything I don’t like about it. I could keep going about every part of the pack, but I hope I painted a good enough picture of how capable it is. The pack screams quality, expertise, and pride from every angle.

I love the fit and the features so far. I have not had a chance to really use it so far, but I plane on doing some workouts and hikes with it pretty soon. I am glad that I went with 5500 over the 3500. If you are struggling between the two go with the 5500. As stated on the website, the 5500 compresses down very well. Can’t wait to be out in the hills with my new pack. Hopefully I will have a good pic to add to the gallery.
    Thanks EXO

Haven’t had a chance to wear it in the field yet but, it seems to be a very well built pack. It fits perfect and it had more than enough room for all many gear. I usually go on 7-10 day hunts ask I went with the 5500 but when cinched all the way down it’s small enough for a 2-3 day hunt. So that’s why I went with the 5500 because a smaller pack can’t stretch if you need more room.

    I Love this Ruck!
its an outstanding setup, If your stuck on what brand to go for (Exo, Kifaru, Mystery Ranch) For Sure go for the Exo. I had the chance to use Kifaru and mystery ranch bags for hiking,Hunting, military field exercises, but I went for the Shot in the dark with Exo and I do not regret my decision at all this thing in my Opinion smashes the competition, It provides the ability to carry heavy loads comfortably. I prefer simple bomb proof gear, And exo hits the mark in every category for me.

Cheaper than the competition with the outstanding build quality over all
Holds Heavy loads super Easy and comfortably
    Simple, Bomb Proof Design
Versatility, this thing does it all. Day pack to 12 day hunt (I had plenty of room left over too)
allows for customization, I Added shock cord to the front panels weave(gotta get your kit the way you like it)
Very Weather Resistant (inside liner material is outstanding)
The Cordura is top notch, No frays or tears from thorns/barbs
I prefer Exos Frame and load lift design over Kifarus
Plenty of Places to secure tie downs.

The zipper pull cord things (the zipper itself is solid) break, but a simple bit of 550 fixes that eh?
The guide lid is sub par, I love the placement of the zipper (I can grab stuff out of it while wearing the bag), but its size is just to small…

Improves: (Just A few simple things I think would make the next version of this bag just stomp its competition)
The Kidney pads/belt doesn’t have any real solid ability to attach a holster or other stuff (but the adjustment strap will enable you to attach them, Just not as secure as I would like)
The lower back pad on the belt needed to have the rhino liner rubber stuff sewn to the entire bottom portion to prevent fraying (mines not torn but you can see a decent amount of fraying starting after 6 months of use, caused from sitting down with the bag on I assume or even leaving the bag standing up on the ground)
I would like to see rows of MOLLE loops on the inside of the bag, It would allow some one to add more organization for those who want to, but still allow minimalist to do so as well with very little extra material to add to the bag.
I would Add cross weaving shock cord to the front of the bag (That bungee stuff you see on tactical bags) its a simple accessory that has thousands of uses.

Over all, If you are indecisive on getting this bag, Just get it. Coming from a guy that spent a month researching and testing bags before getting a Exo. Its just worth every penny.

My 5500 arrived yesterday and I love it! I was really worried that the 5500 would be too big for a day pack and it would look like I have a turtle shell on my back but this pack can get ridiculously small. I’m no longer considering getting the 2000 bag for just day hunts. The seams and straps appear to be bomb proof. If you are up in the air about getting a 3500 as opposed to the 5500 I would get the 5500. I cannot wait to get it out and do a long backpacking trip!

I’ve used a lot of different packs in my time with the military (mystery ranch, tactical tailor, kelty, osprey, etc.) and I have never found one that was worth spending my personal money on. That is until I tried out the EXO K2 5500. This pack distributes the weight extremely well and is super functional. All of my essentials were easily accessible and this thing can hold a ton of gear. It also packs down nice and small for day hunts. I used it for a Colorado elk hunt this year and put in some serious miles with it on my back. It is absolutely worth the money and I would recommend it to everyone. As a side note, the guys at EXO sent a Christmas card with a sticker and a hand written note was included with the pack on delivery. World class.

Hands down the most comfortable pack I have ever used. Packed out two black bears this spring, each weighing at 130lbs and 150lbs with gear. Two dresses out, bone in Sitka black tailed deer, and a caribou… It didn’t disappoint.
Living in Alaska I don’t get to hike trails in the off season of winter. The only thing I can do to stay in shape in the off season is to take the bag off and strap on 80# of salt on the meat hauler and hit the treadmill. I highly recommend this to anyone in need of a bulletproof pack!

I am an engineer by education and vocation so I am always quite critical of any piece of gear I get. I do a lot of research before buying and then thoroughly inspect the piece when I get it to see if it is going to live up to my expectations. More often than I care to count, I am left wondering what the hell were they thinking when they designed this? That was not the case with my 5500. Its design is well thought out and the craftsmanship is solid. I toted it around for a week last year on a caribou hunt and I was very pleased with how comfortable it was. It also has a ton of room. I would highly recommend this bag to anyone.

i have always bought the cheaper gear for hunting, especially packs. i finally caved and purchased a new Tenzing TZ6000 about 4 years ago and thought i really treated myself. tons of room, name brand, brand new shipped directly from the factory. when i took it out for the first time i thought it was great, i felt pretty proud of my big new pack. from that day forward every time i took that pack hunting my back and shoulders would hurt for a couple days after….just thought it was part of packing more then 15+ lbs in you pack. Friends of mine has tried the Eberlystock, Badlands, a couple others that are name brand and eventually landed on Exo Mountain. That became there ultimate pack, they swore up and down that it was the best thing ever. After hearing this for a couple years i finally decided to really check them out after watching the “Land of the Free Project” with the BRO crew. watching them pack meat with others including Steve Speck from Exo i convinced my wife to let me order one. After a long 5 week wait…..my pack arrived. It was like christmas. i loaded everything i had in my old tenzing, and couldn’t wait to set out for the roughest hike i could find around me. i decided to hit a state park that has a 1000 ft vertical climb in less then a mile. Smith Rock State park. i have never been so impressed with a pack! it was actually comfortable! It breathed on my back! i could move without it swinging from side to side, it was unlike any other pack i have ever used. at the end of the day and into the next the only thing that was sore are my calfs, not an ounce of back or shoulder pain. the only regret i have is waiting this long to purchase. look forward to hauling big loads of meat out of the woods with confidence. Big shout out to Jen and Steve, there customer service was second to none…..and there product has proven the same. impressed really doesn’t cover it!
